The primary purpose of primary clarifiers in wastewater treatment is to separate solids from liquids. During the wastewater treatment process, primary clarifiers play a crucial role in the preliminary treatment stage. When wastewater enters a primary clarifier, it undergoes a gravity separation process where heavier solids settle to the bottom, forming a sludge layer. Meanwhile, lighter materials, including oils and greases, float to the top, creating a scum layer.

This separation is vital as it removes a significant portion of suspended solids and some organic materials from the wastewater, allowing the liquid portion to move on to further treatment stages, such as biological treatment processes. This initial separation of solids helps reduce the load on subsequent treatment systems, thus enhancing overall system efficiency and effectiveness.

In contrast, while organic materials might be partially removed, the main goal is not complete removal but rather the reduction of solids. Biological decomposition is more relevant to secondary treatment processes, where microorganisms further break down organic matter. Concentrating dissolved solids is not a primary function of clarifiers, as they are designed to separate rather than concentrate.
